Professional Industry Association Improves Identification of Employee-Owned Businesses

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) sought to gain a clearer understanding of the ownership structures within its member base and potential members. Specifically, CBI aimed to identify employee-owned businesses to better assess the impact of varied ownership models on the UK economy. However, given the diverse types of employee ownership—ranging from employee ownership trusts to co-operatives and share ownership schemes—traditional databases couldn’t offer the depth of insight needed.

By leveraging Glass.AI’s advanced AI-driven research capabilities, CBI was able to scan the digital footprint of all UK businesses, uncovering a wide range of ownership models. The AI technology pinpointed businesses with unique structures like employee ownership schemes, mutual societies, and companies with active employee-centric governance. Cross-referencing these insights with official data and other public sources provided a robust, evidence-backed view of each business’s ownership structure.

As a result, CBI doubled its coverage of employee-owned businesses compared to previous studies. With this expanded dataset, Glass.AI identified key individuals within these companies to build a comprehensive sample frame for CBI’s targeted survey on ownership structures.
